Research topics

  •  Modeling the surface energy balance,  evapotranspiration and carbon fluxes at regional scales with thermal and optical remote sensing from UAVs (drones) and satellites.
  •  Development of new land degradation and disturbance indicators based on surface energy changes
  •  Assessing the effects of drought on ecosystem functioning and resilience using time-series analyses

Background

Monica obtained a Master in International Agricultural Development at the University of California, Davis (2000) and a Ph.D. in Remote Sensing of the environment (2003) at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, (Spain) where she also graduated as an Agricultural Engineer. She was a postdoc at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Spain, Copenhagen University  (Denmark) and Columbia University (USA) where she is currently an adjunct research scientist. She developed eco-hydrological indicators to monitor  ecosystem services, or land degradation in water-limited regions like the Mediterranean basin, the African Sahel or California. Her research has been featured in Nature Geosciences, the New Scientist, and Reuters.
