Marcel Tutor Ale


Marcel have multidisciplinary expertise involving biochemistry, food technology, biotechnology, process engineering and algae biorefinery. Raised in the Philippines, work in Denmark, and have research collaboration in Japan, Botswana and Ghana strengthen his flexibility with multicultural working environment. Having a BSc in Agricultural Engineering, he is well-versed in food production technology, process equipment design and drying technology for various agricultural and chemical products. During his MSc studies, he conducted development research on sustainable food production in Botswana as well as worked as intern in the Carrageenan Production plant of CP Kelco in Sibunga, Cebu Phillippines. Three times he was invited in Kitasato Hospital, Kanagawa Japan during his PhD study - as guest researcher to perform cell proliferation assay and apoptosis assay of bioactive compounds (i.e. Fucoidan) for cancer cell lines and published in journal of Marine Drugs. He developed offshore seaweed cultivation technology and a Lab scale process design for seaweed hydrocolloid extraction aimed for further execution on Large scale hydrocolloid processing in Ghana for food ingredients. He obtained a PhD in Bioprocess Engineering at DTU Chemical Engineering, Denmark (2011) and MSc in Agricultural Development at Copenhagen University, Denmark (2006).

• Coordinated projects and supervision with Ghanaian Phd and MSc student. Visited regularly and held seminars and lectures to students. Designed seaweed cultivation system for seaweed hydrocolloid production. Participated field research activities and conducted knowledge transfer.

Guest Researcher, Kitasato University, Japan (2011, 2012, 2013)
• Pre-clinical examination on immune response activity and antitumor properties for active compounds from seaweed.

Speaker and Chairperson, 1st BIT World Congress of Marine Biotechnology, China - 2011
• Invited as Chairman of the Biotechnology Improving Algal Production & Productivity section and presented own research work regarding seaweed  polysaccharide.
