Expertise

Biochemical toxicology, biomarkers of exposure and effect, mechanisms in carcinogenicity and endocrine disruption, toxicological in vitro methods and animal studies. Toxicological evaluations and risk assessments of chemicals in food, environment and consumer products, such as food additives, pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, PAH, mycotoxins and toxic metals. Assessment of major topics in toxicology and risk assessment on the national and international levels, such as: allergy and intolerance, diet and cancer, use of biological markers, applicability of the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) to infants and children, uncertainty and variability in risk assessment, thresholds on toxicological concern (TTC), and cumulative risk assessment of chemicals.

International experience

1980-present: Nordic, EU and WHO expert groups on risk assessments of dioxins, PCBs, PAH and other chemicals. 1990-present: Member of the FAO/WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Since 2000 elected chairman. 2000-2003: Member of the EU Scientific Committee for Food (SCF). 2003-2008: Member (and Vice-chair) of the Scientific Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids, and Food Contact Materials (AFC Panel) under the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). 2008-present: Member and Chairman of the Scientific Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources (ANS Panel) under the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). 2008-present: Member of the Scientific Committee (SC) for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
