Irene Kouskoumvekaki is working in the area of computational chemical biology, where informatics methods are applied to look into how small molecules (medicines, xenobiotics, natural compounds) are interacting with the human organism. She is especially interested in understanding why medicine cause side effects and how this could be avoided, as well as why some medicine have no beneficial effect on a number of patients, while curing others. In the area of natural products, she is investigating the potential of natural compounds from plants that are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) – and ethnopharmacology in general – as novel lead compounds in medicinal research.
