Siden 2010 har Helle Rootzen været institutdirektør på først DTU Informatik og fra 2013 på DTU Compute.

Forskningsmæssigt beskæftiger hun sig bl.a. med følgende spørgsmål: Hvordan er vandmiljøet i Kattegat? Hvordan sørger man for, at de ting, vi køber, ikke indeholder fejl? Hvorfor er den ene type medicin bedre end den anden? Helle Rootzén forsker desuden i undervisningsrelaterede emner og har bl.a. udviklet systemet HEROS - et ikke-lineært web-baseret undervisningssystem. Hun har i et år været deltidsansat på LearningLab, DTU og blev i år 2000 valgt som "årets underviser" af de studerende på DTU. Helle Rootzén er docent i statistik ved Informatik og Matematisk Modellering (IMM). Helle blev uddannet som cand. scient. i statistik ved Københavns Universitet i 1985 og blev ph.d. i statistik ved DTU i 1989. Siden da har hun været ansat ved IMM først som adjunkt, derefter som lektor og nu siden 2005 som docent. I 1997/98 havde hun orlov og arbejdede et år i Danish Breast Cancer Cooperation Group på Rigshospitalet. Hun har desuden været ekstern lektor ved Institut for Folkesundhed, Afdeling for Biostatistik ved København Universitet i 1998-2004. Helle besidder en række tillidsposter og er medlem af flere videnskabelige selskaber.

  • Statistical e-learning: HEROS:

We have developed a prototype for a new kind of e-learning called HEROS (Higher Education Re-usable Objects in Statistics): a non-linear learning object based learning system. It lets students design their own individual research based course in statistics and mathematics in a way which suits their level and learning style. We are developing new approaches to using the ideas in the system and are studying the merits of the different approaches. We have received DKK 3 million from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to develop a continuing education course in basic statistics and to develop a university course in mathematics – both based on the principle in HEROS.  

  • Industrial Statistics: Improving industrial processes - An example

There is a need for improving industrial processes to obtain higher quality, reliability and productivity. The explosive increase of size and sophistication of modern industry leads to a need for development of new statistical methods which solve many new problems. However, the distance between theoretical research at universities and the practical problems facing industry is often large. The area is full of ad-hoc methods and new useful results often find it difficult get used by industry. Our project is to bridge the gap between the two worlds. We will do this by combining development of new theory with work on concrete industrial projects. An example: Production planning and design for the NovoPen4 at Novo Nordisk, is a pilot project for on-line statistical process control (SPC) in Novo Nordisk. (This work is joint with Gitte Legindgaard) 

  • Environmental Statistics: Statistical Analysis of Phytoplankton - An example

Euthrification in coastal waters causes growth of phytoplankton which can lead to shading out of benthic vegetation and oxygen depletion. Experimental studies and theoretical considerations of growth strategies have shown that changing nutrient levels should affect the phytoplankton composition. No realcase studies have been done to support these theories. By using data spanning two decades, from 30 stations based on the coast of Denmark, statistical models are created to show the phytoplankton response to total nitrogen and total phosphorous and to identify those species with high responsiveness to changing nutrient levels. (This work is joint with Hua Fan and Jacob Carstensen)  

  • MMC Master

I am coordinator for the Msc program in Mathematical Modelling and Computation - MMC Master (www.imm.dtu.dk/mmcmaster).  

  • Elite program

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation awarded DKK 250000 for development of an elite program in Industrial Mathematics. Only 12 such program grants were given in all of science and humanities in Denmark. I was the applicant and I am now the program coordinator.
