Emil Engelund Thybring


My research focus is on the interaction between wood and water on the nano-scale. This interaction is at the heart of all engineering applications of wood; from long-term deformations of wood structures to durability and deterioration of wood facades. Often, water has a negative effect on the performance of wood, i.e. by causing excessive deformations and facilitating biological degradation, all in all decreasing the service life of wood structures. Therefore, predicting the performance of wood structures in various climatic conditions necessitates fundamental knowledge about the complex interaction between water and wood.

My research targets a better understanding of the physical mechanisms by which water affects wood. The goal is to understand how the nanoscale behaviour affects the observed macroscale performance of wood. Ultimately, this knowledge can be used to facilitate new and improved ways of dealing with water in wood: from development and optimisation of chemical modifications of wood to improvement of our design guides for wood structures.
