Dimitar Borisov Karakashev received his PhD in Microbiology from the Institute of Microbiology- Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IM-BAS, Sofia, Bulgaria) in 2005. During his PhD he spent nine months at Department of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, DK. He has a multidisciplinary background in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, and process biotechnologies. Currently, he is employed as a senior researcher (equivalence of associated professor) in Bioenergy Group, Section Residual Resources , Department of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. His research interests focus on the biofuels production from residual biomass feedstocks in a biorefinery aspect.

Long termextensive experience in research project management. Participation in a large number of EU projects, such as Bioenergy Forum Øresund (Interreg III and Interreg IV), PIGMAN (FP6), and AQUATTERE (FP7), E4Water (FP7). National projects are from the Danish Research Council, EFP, PSO, etc. Member of European Commission experts’ database for evaluation of project applications under research framework programme call FP7-SME-2013. Evaluator of research project applications submitted under Italian Ministry for Education University and Research (MIUR).
