My research project is mainly about understanding how the Plasmodium parasite, which is causing malaria, is able to create variation and evade the immune response in humans. I am studying the underlying mechanisms for the regulation and generation of diversity in the highly variable var-genes. I use bioinformatics approaches such as Gibbs sampling and other machine learning methods to gather information about the composition of genes and promotor regions. I also develop new statistical based methods for characterization of genes.
