Prebiotics are dietary carbohydrates known to stimulate the growth of intestinal beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the gut of humans and animals. Increased numbers of probiotics in the gut are believed to enhance resistance to infections by bacterial pathogens through direct interactions between gut bacteria and through stimulation of the immune system.

The aim of my project is to study how prebiotic dietary carbohydrates affect salmonella infections in mice and whether the infection can be prevented with prebiotics as it has been shown for probiotics.
