The scientific goals of the research are to develop, test and validate a set of systematic methods and tools for
optimising control of integrated sewerage and wastewater systems. The first research novelty of this project is that
it introduces a radical change in the current practice of optimising control for integrated sewerage and WWTP
systems by using a systems engineering approach which formulates the problem of optimising control as a
systematic, structured, model-based methodology.
The second research novelty of the project is that it employs a hierarchical (cascade) decomposition of the control
problem into several layers according to time scales, which are then solved using appropriate optimization and
control techniques. In this way the solution of the problem becomes effective and optimal.
 
The project gives a special emphasize to the supervisory and predictive control layer. The project will result in a tested systematic methodology and tools, which will be applicable to different catchment areas and WWTP systems thereby
improving considerably the operation economics and environmental objectives of the wastewater management.
