I am a doctor of veterinary medicine by education, and after my graduation I have worked in epidemiology and quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA), particularly in the field of food safety. I have a special interest on data limitations and data analysis methodologies. During my PhD on “The interpretation of quantitative microbial data: meeting the demands of quantitative microbiological risk assessment”, I developed a statistical model to describe prevalence and concentration of microorganisms in food,  and I focused on the impact of variability and uncertainty on model predictions and model validation.

Presently, I investigate new analytical methods for the application of new generation sequencing data in surveillance. This includes “big data” statistical approaches (such as machine learning), adapting traditional models to new data types (such as metagenomics), and combining epidemiological and genomic data.

I enjoy teaching and have had the opportunity to lecture QMRA in several international courses under the scope of the European Commission’s programs EDES and BTSF, as well as in DTU’s QMRA summer school.

International networking has been an important element of my research. I have orally presented my work in several international conferences and meetings, and have been invited to attend/speak in several workshops/colloquiums with a focus on food safety risk assessment. Furthermore, I have been seconded to three different international research institutions: Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (2009), Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture - Food Safety Centre - University of Tasmania (2012) and Complutense University of Madrid – Department of Animal Health (2015).
